Responsibilities:
The physician assistants work in collaboration with the resident team to provide comprehensive care to inpatients at Tufts Medical Center experiencing a wide variety of conditions involving the brain and spine. In addition to the responsibility of the inpatient service, which involves intensive care, intermediate care and floor level patients, the team manages emergency room and off-service consultations, including traumas. To succeed in the role, the physician assistant needs excellent critical thinking skills and efficiency. The PA must demonstrate initiative to complete daily tasks and address the continual needs of the patients and their families.
Proficiency in general medicine is required. The neurosurgery service functions as the primary team for patients, rather than a consulting service, requiring comfort with management of active chronic medical illnesses and postoperative conditions, such as arrhythmias and ventilator management.
Ability to independently evaluate patients, order and interpret appropriate diagnostic studies and initiate clinical intervention based on the results of those studies is expected.
Strong interpersonal skills are crucial for effective communication both within the interdisciplinary care team and for coordination of care with consulting services.
The role involves procedural skills such as, but not limited to, drain removal, suturing and arterial line placement. There are no operative procedures associated with this position.
