Advanced Practice Provider - Clinical Decision Unit (CDU)

As a Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) you will work alongside Emergency Medicine (EM) Physicians, EM APPs, EM nurses and staff as well as hospital consultants to provide excellence in healthcare delivery. APPs in this role will collaborate with and manage patient care needs through indirect physician supervision, so that autonomy is both encouraged and fostered. Our EM CDU APPs stabilize and manage acute and chronic emergency medical conditions with increasing independent expertise and autonomy. Although the focus of this role is primarily clinical, there are Career Development opportunities to engage in including Education, Leadership, and Quality Improvement initiatives.

Each year approximately 75,000 patients from the Piedmont Triad region choose Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem to care for their medical needs.

As an extension of the ED, the CDU’s primary mission is to provide Observation Medicine in a designated care space for select ED patient conditions over a timeframe of 6 to 24 hours to assess their need for inpatient admission. This type of care delivery is achieved through accelerated, protocol-driven care pathways that promote standardized, best practice management, and optimizes patient care needs by collaboration with consultants across the healthcare system. CDU care promotes an improved patient experience and satisfaction while positively supporting ED and hospital operations. The CDU also provides care to active, non-observation ED patients with medically complex conditions that require more extensive diagnostic evaluation and/or care coordination prior to disposition.

The CDU APPs are responsible for reassessing patients care needs and coordinating care across a multidisciplinary team of physicians, APPs, and other clinical professionals. They interpret results from diagnostic tests, integrate care plans from consultants, and re-evaluate patient’s response to medications and therapies to determine the patient’s final disposition. A supervising EM physician is always available for consultation; however, the APP has autonomy and directs patient care in this care space.
