Lead Advance Practice Provider, Emergency Medicine Observation Unit
JOB DESCRIPTION: Provides leadership, management, and training of the Advance Practice Provider (APP) in the Emergency Observation Unit. Recruits and hires APP staff, establishes work schedules, supervises staff performance, conducts performance evaluations, and determines and disseminates quality activities and designs for assigned staff. The position ensures operational efficiencies through patient throughput and customer satisfaction. Work closely with the ED Observation medical director to obtain key performance measures for the unit. Coordinates clinical scheduling with the department APP scheduler. Tracks APP productivity and provides reports to management. Provides primary care to patients in the ED Observation Unit. Assists in the evaluation and treatment of patients. Conducts patient interviews and collects and interprets diagnostic data. Under the direction of a physician performs physical examinations and specialized procedures. Documents the delivery of care in the patient’s medical record. Provides emergency medical screening, evaluation, management and appropriate follow-up to patients. Initiates patient care plans, including medical and pharmacological management as needed. Participates in research and incorporates its findings into practice. Actively participates in continuous quality improvement projects including but not limited to lab and radiology callbacks. Maintains high customer service with patients, staff, administrators, and physicians. Provides and/or serves as a resource for patient/family and staff education. Stays up to date with divisional policies, guidelines, medical staff, and hospital policies, rules, and regulations. Performs other duties as required by supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced Nursing or Physician Assistant degree and appropriate licensure (PA or NP) required. A minimum of five years of experience in emergency medicine or observation medicine is preferred.
Administrative duties include but are not limited to scheduling, preparing agendas and chairing monthly meetings, attending leadership meetings, and frequent meetings with the medical director. Track and approve (along with the medical director and scheduler) providers’ vacation/leave. Track performance criteria. Encourages academic and clinical excellence, and encourages professionalism and positive attitudes among peers and colleagues.
