Scholarship and Job Description

The Financial Assistance Program (FAP), provides you with an annual grant of up to $45,000 plus a monthly stipend of over $2,500 throughout your residency.

At the forefront of innovation in a wide range of surgical procedures, the U.S. Army is an ideal choice for general surgeons who not only want to advance their careers but also want to advance the practice of surgery. From groundbreaking work in regenerative medicine to the development of 3-D anatomical models to aid in surgical pre- and post-op planning, the surgical advancements being pioneered right now by the U.S. Army Medical Department are improving outcomes for their patients and changing the practice of medicine.

Duties Include:

  • Examine, diagnose and treat or prescribe course of treatment and surgery for patients with injuries or disorders with surgical conditions, and perform required surgery
  • Provide consultation and advice to the command and staff regarding surgical matters
  • Conduct and supervise direct patient care, and plan and execute disease prevention and health promotion programs
  • Exercise command of medical units as provided by law and regulation
  • Perform special staff functions in health support for commanders at all levels
  • Conduct medical research on diseases of military importance, and conduct, supervise and participate graduate medical education and training of other medical personnel needed to sustain a robust and readily available medical system

Scholarship Requirements

- You must have completed PGY I and successfully passed all three steps of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) exams on their first attempt.
-Applicants entering the program at the PGYIII level and above, you must have obtained a full unrestricted license within 2 years following completion of medical school or prior to program
-Must be a U.S. Citizen
-Must have a doctor of medicine or osteopathy degree from an accredited US school of medicine or osteopathy. Foreign graduates may apply if they have a permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Scholarship Obligation

Under your Financial Assistance Program sponsorship, your minimum active duty (full time) obligation as an Army Soldier is two years for the first year of FAP participation, plus six months for each additional six months (or portions thereof) of participation in the program. Acceptance is not automatic and is reviewed upon a case-by-case basis.

Requirements Include:

  • Doctor of medicine or doctor of osteopathy degree from an accredited U.S. school of medicine or osteopathy; foreign graduates may apply if they have a permanent certificate from the Educational Council of Foreign Medical Graduates.
  • Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the United States, District of Columbia or Puerto Rico.
  • U.S. citizenship or Permanent Residence (Reserve only).

If I join the Army now, will I be pulled out the program?

No! As a resident in FAP, you will be designated a member of the Army’s Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), though you will not be required to wear a uniform nor be pulled away from your medical training for deployments.

In exchange, you will be required to participate in one 14-day annual training period for
every year you spend in the program.

During your annual training period, you will be placed on active-duty status and receive pay and benefits equal to that of a Captain in the U.S. Army.
